Clerical child abuse report shocking and ‘beggars belief’

Issued: 26 November 2009

Green Party Justice spokesperson comments on child abuse report

Speaking following the publication of the report by the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin today Green Party Justice spokesperson Ciaran Cuffe TD said:

“Judge Yvonne Murphy and her colleagues must be commended for the diligence of their work.

“It beggars belief that no Archbishop reported child sexual abuse to the Gardaí throughout the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s.”

“The Catholic Church must question its whole approach to sexuality in the light of Judge Murphy’s Report.

“At a time when members of the Catholic Church hierarchy are actively campaigning against the Civil Partnership Bill being brought before the Dáil next week, there must be a pause for reflection within the Catholic Church, and a more concerted effort to protect the vulnerable.”
