Future of Salmon Farming is in Onshore Aquaculture

Serious public concerns over the siteing of proposed salmon farm in Galway Bay were voiced at yesterday's public debate hosted by the Galway Green Party.

Seamus Sheridan, Green Party Spokesperson for Agriculture, Food and Marine, today stated: "I am adamant that aquaculture can play a significant role in the future of Ireland's food industry but this cannot be at a cost to local and national communities.

"The future of salmon farming is in onshore aquaculture, as is being developed in other EU countries. The Green Party urges Minister Coveney to consider using the valuable resource of Bord Iascaigh Mhara to develop onshore fish farming which is better for disease control and the environment.

"We are concerned about rushing in and allowing market demand to dictate our fisheries industry if we are to ensure the long term sustainability of aquaculture. Bord Iascaigh Mhara's Environmental Impact Statement for Galway Bay does not adequately address concerns regarding sea lice, which was clearly a great concern on the evening. Furthermore it under estimates the gravity of escapees on wild salmon stock which are already in decline.

"We were overwhelmed with public interest and turnout of yesterday's debate and would like to thank all for attending and participating. It was disappointing to have to turn away some due to overcapacity concerns. The debate was recorded and video will be made available on the Green Party Website."
