Viability of the company threatened as continued downward spiral of mail volumes continues
Price hike on stamps will only make matter worse
Green Party Leader and TD for Dublin Bay South, Eamon Ryan TD, said today that 9,000 workers in An Post are facing a bleak New Year, as the Government revealed that the continued downward spiral in the mail business threatens the viability of the company.
Speaking today, he said: “An Post is now in deep trouble. Mail volumes have fallen 6.7% this year and are projected to fall another 10% next year. The company is close to running out of cash reserves and the Government have been forced to push an increase in stamp in an attempt to get out of the immediate cash crisis.
“This price increase is only likely to make matters worse. The Government has allowed An Post drift into this crisis. They say they want to now employ consultants to consider other emergency options. Meanwhile the Bobby Kerr report, published in 2015, into other aspects of their business is gathering dusted on a shelf. This crisis was predicted years ago. The workers in the company have reason to ask why things were allowed to slip so low before the crisis was finally recognised.”
