Green Party Convention 2017 to take place in Waterford between March 24th – 26th

14th March 2017

This year's Convention in Waterford will be held on March 24th - 26th in The Tower Hotel. We are very excited to be back in Waterford again, and the Waterford Greens are doing a tremendous job in organising a fantastic line up of events, debate, speakers and entertainment.

We am delighted to announce that our keynote speaker this year will be Peter Willcox, whom many of you will know as the former captain of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior serving alongside our very own Senator Grace O'Sullivan. He will be interviewed in the main convention room on Friday night (24th).

In addition to the regular debates on motions, we have confirmed side & breakout events including a seminar on mindfulness and mental health, a panel discussion on the media, politics and the challenge of 'alternative fact' politics, a facilitated discussion on achieving a Just Transition, meetings for Young Greens, Mná Glasa and New Members and much more to be confirmed.

Added to this we are delighted to announce the return of exhibition stands - featuring a range of local and national sustainably-focused businesses who will be there to inform and educate about their products.

Our friends in Waterford are also working on outdoor pursuits for Members - in particular it is hoped to have an organised cycle of the newly opened Deise Greenway on Sunday 26th. If you can't bring your bike to Waterford, we hope to arrange rental from a local supplier - so please indicate in the field below if you would like to rent a bike.

Most importantly - Members will have ample time to meet, catch up and share a drink. We have arranged for live entertainment in the Tower Hotel bar on Saturday night.

Accomodation Options

If you haven't been to a convention in a while, or if you are a new member, we would like to particularly encourage you to attend this year. We have put some effort into making this as enjoyable an event as possible for all our Members; and in that spirit we have been hard at work securing reduced delegate accommodation rates which you can access here

Special Delegate Fare on Irish Rail

We have struck a deal with Irish Rail which will allow delegates who book 7 or more tickets together to receive a discount of up to 25% on their train fares. Simply check the suitable return train connection for your group. Have a designated person email grouptravel@irishrail.ie advising of their name and a contact numbers. Irish Rail will call back to confirm the itinerary, price and take full payment for the group ticket. This also applies to delegates travelling from Northern Ireland.

This offer is available from Friday, February 24th until Friday, March 24th, so please wait until Friday next before emailing Irish Rail. We would encourage Members to organise availing of this discount at their next Constituency Group meeting.

Convention Dinner and Members Draw

Our annual members' dinner will take place on Saturday night - tickets can be bought below.  The ticket includes a three course meal, vegetarian/vegan option will be available. Our annual draw will be held also on Saturday night, and tickets will be available on site at the Tower Hotel.

On-Site Childcare

Finally, we would like to be especially encouraging of members with young children to attend. If we have a sufficient level of interest we will arrange for on-site childcare in the Tower Hotel. Please let us know if you would like this by filling out the field below and telling us how many kids you would like to bring to convention.

Our convention slogan this year is 'Now, More Than Ever'. This is the central message we want convention to convey to the country - the time has never been more urgent for us as Green progressives to stand up for the climate and our environment, to stand against the narrow and insular populism that is spreading across the world, and to say confidently that our seven founding principles are needed more than ever before.

Our party has been revitalised in the last year, and we very much look forward to meeting you all in Waterford where we can make this a Convention to remember.
