Husband and wife, Francis Noel Duffy and CatherineMartin, have both won seats for the Green Party on Dublin CountyCouncils. Catherine, the deputy leader of the Green Party, and Francis wereelected to Dun Laoghaire -Rathdown County Council (Dundrum ward) and South Dublin CountyCouncil (Rathfarnham ward) respectively.
Catherine has been a teacher of music and English at St. Tiernan's CommunitySchool, Dundrum for the past 14 years. She was elected as Deputy Leader ofthe Green Party in 2011.
Speaking after her election Catherine said: "Weare genuinely humbled by this result and understand that our voters have givenus a fresh opportunity to work hard for them. We will focus our efforts onproper planning, community facilities, supporting local businessand affordable and reliable transport networks in the years ahead."
Francis Noel Duffy was elected after a very close race and paid tribute to thecouple's supporters and voters. He commented: "This is an example ofhow every vote counts, and I especially want to thank those who voted Greenthis weekend. We are delighted to be part of the Green Party's new beginning.On the doorsteps we heard from people anxious to have a green voice inlocal politics, and we will work to make their concerns heard at a councillevel."
Francis is well known in his community, as a coach atWanderers GAA Club, Ballyboden, and as a member of the Juvenile Committee,representing the Club on the County Board. He has worked with the TallaghtHospital Action Group (THAG) and made several submissions to the CountyCouncil in respect of Local Area Plans in relation to sustainable developmentand community recreational facilities. He has also been engaged with the localTidy Towns. He is a lecturer in the Dublin School of Architecture, DIT.
Catherine and Francis are both originally fromCarrickmacross, County Monaghan, and have three children.
