Green Party statement on the resignation of Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD

14th June 2017

Speaking following the resignation of Deputy Enda Kenny as Taoiseach, Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan TD said:

“We commend the Taoiseach for his hard work and courteous approach to politics over the last six years. He was handed the baton in 2011 and did not let it fall. He broadly stuck to the four year National Recovery Plan developed by the Fianna Fáil/Green Party government, and managed to hold two administrations together during a time of great uncertainty.  No-one can tell what would have happened had we taken the alternative path and let things go, but Enda Kenny deserves credit for helping get our country out of the worst of our economic crisis.

“While that approach stabilised the country it neglected to take the next step and bring badly needed political and economic reform. Those two administrations also failed to see that the protection of the natural world is in all our interest. The new Fine Gael leadership must recognise that a fairer, more sustainable economy goes hand in hand with looking after the environment. Ireland has the opportunity to go truly green, and take advantage of the green industrial revolution that will define the 21st century.  We wish Enda Kenny well in whatever comes next and we will hold his successor to account as we seek this Greener, fairer Ireland for all. ”
