Green Party welcomes recommendations of the Joint Committee on the Eighth Amendment

13th December 2017

The Green Party today welcomed the Joint Committee on the Eighth Amendment’s recommendation to hold a referendum to simply repeal the Eighth Amendment and to legislate for termination without restriction up to 12 weeks.

Reacting to the news Green Party Deputy Leader Catherine Martin TD said “The Committee’s recommendation has put Ireland on track to providing full reproductive care to its citizens.

“Over the last 13 weeks the expert evidence and experiences heard at the Committee have shown just how pressing the need is to remove the eighth amendment from our constitution. Women’s healthcare should not be constitutionally restricted and now, for the first time in 34 years, we have an opportunity to rectify that.

“I would like to commend those on the Committee who approached it with an open mind and engaged with the evidence. Their journey over the last few months is reflective of Irish society as a whole.

“I now call on my colleagues in the Dáil to support these recommendations when they comes before us. We can no longer hide from our duties as legislators. We must stand up for what is right and mandate for a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.

The Green Party will be campaigning for repeal of the Eighth Amendment and will advocate legislating for free, safe and legal terminations up to and including 12 weeks’ gestation without restriction
