The Green Party has today welcomed the Joint Committee on the 8th Amendment’s final report, recommending a referendum to simply repeal the 8th Amendment and to legislate for termination without restriction up to 12 weeks.
Commenting on the report Green Party Deputy Leader Catherine Martin TD said: “The Committee’s report gives clear guidance to the Dáil to mandate for a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment.
“The expert evidence heard at the Committee showed just how pressing the need is to remove the 8th Amendment from our Constitution. I would like to commend the Committee on the work over the last term and for engaging with the evidence with an open mind. Their journey over the last few months is reflective of Irish society as a whole.
“The responsibility now lies with members of the Oireachtas to support these recommendations. We can no longer hide from our duties as legislators. We must stand up for what is right and give our citizens the opportunity, for the first time in 35 years, to vote on a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment.
The Green Party will be campaigning for repeal of the 8th Amendment and will advocate legislating for free, safe and legal terminations up to and including 12 weeks’ gestation without restriction."
