Greens: Latest Halawa trial ‘offends the principles we hold dear’

13th December 2016

he Green Party said today that today must be the last birthday Ibrahim Halawa spends behind bars while awaiting mass trial in Egypt. Turning 21 today, he was just 17 years old when arrested.

Speaking in response to the latest delay in the trial of Ibrahim Halawa in Egypt, Green Party Deputy Leader Catherine Martin TD said: “Ibrahim has now had 17 trial dates over 1,215 days, and is no closer to justice than when this ordeal started. No evidence ever been presented against him and he has had no opportunity to present a defence. He was just 17 when arrested, but he has turned 21 in an Egyptian prison.

“The treatment of Ibrahim offends the principles we all hold dear - rule of law, due process, freedom from torture and arbitrary detention and the basic tenets of human rights.

“We truly hope that this will be the last birthday Ibrahim spends in detention, and will continue to pressure the Government to lobby for his release through all available avenues.”
