Martin: Vital that maternity benefit paid on time, without delay

10th May 2017

Minister must ensure current delays do not happen again

Responding to news of delays in payment of maternity benefits Green Party Deputy Leader and TD for Dublin Rathdown Catherine Martin said: “It is wholly unacceptable that mothers of new-born babies should have to wait for up to a month for maternity benefits that they are entitled to.

“Maternity leave is a time of great change with massive financial and emotional upheaval. It is therefore vital that maternity benefits are paid consistently and with certainty.

“I appreciate that Minister Varadkar has promised that those affected will be paid in arrears, but this simply should not have happened in the first place. Procedures should be in place to prevent this ever happening again. Staff training and system changes in the Department of Social Welfare and Protection should not have such repercussions for new mothers.”

Deputy Martin concluded by saying, “Recently a motion brought forward by the Green Party was passed in Dáil, which will allow for extension of maternity payments for mothers of premature babies. It is imperative that the Department is ready for the introduction of these payments and that we do not see a re-occurrence of this issue.”
