Ryan: Government can’t greenwash UN update on SDGs

DGs Monitoring Report critical of Ireland on waste, climate, ocean protection & global partnership targets
The Green Party said today that the Government can’t greenwash their update on the Sustainable Development Goals, as Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, attends a United Nations event.
Minister Naughten is in New York today attending a meeting of Heads of State and Ministers from 193 countries, which is reviewing the implementation on a global scale of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Speaking today, Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan TD said the Government mustn’t greenwash their update to the UN, and acknowledge failings in waste, climate, ocean protection and global partnership targets.
“The Sustainable Development Goals Index and Dashboards Report, published last week, shows Ireland doing well on some of the social goals but failing badly when it comes to action on waste, climate, ocean protection and global partnership. I’m sure the government will be keen to put their best foot forward and highlight the areas they are doing well, but they mustn’t greenwash their report. They must acknowledge failings in the areas mentioned.”
Commenting on the report, Deputy Ryan said: “This is the latest in a number of damning reports on Ireland’s record on environmental issues. Fine Gael have utterly failed in this area, and continue to stick to their old development model. Just last week the Government passed the damaging Heritage Bill, which threatens Irish wildlife. At the same time they are attempting to block a range of opposition bills that would help restore our environmental reputation.
"The Government is full of praise for their the new National Development Plan, Project Ireland 2040, but the reality is that they are continuing on the same unsustainable development path. We should be switching to a new economic model where looking after our environmental also helps us build stronger local communities. Fine Gael do not understand that looking after the environment can be good for our economy. They are the laggards who are damaging our international reputation. We need a new national plan that takes sustainability seriously and the Green Party will be working constructively in the Dáil to try to deliver such an alternative plan for the future.”
The SDG Index and Dashboards Report provides a report card for country performance on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung. The report can be found here.
