Candidate for Longford-Westmeath
Manchán Magan is a writer and documentary-maker. He has written books on his travels in Africa, India and South America and two novels. He writes occasionally for The Irish Times, reports weekly on travel for The Right Hook, and has presented dozens of documentaries on issues of world culture for TG4, RTÉ & Travel Channel.
Manchán is running in the general election as a way of offering fresh perspectives on the potential of this region. He believes that there is a desire for living creative, fulfilling and sustainable lives in this area, that by uniting as a community the Midlands can return to the role of the core of Ireland.
If elected, Manchan will strive to ensure renewable power generation such as biogas plants and wind turbines are community-owned, that the tourism potential of the area's lakes, rivers and peatland wildernesses are developed through small-scale local initiatives linked to international networks and that intensive, home retrofitting schemes are undertaken, with grants that cover at least 75% of insulation, damp-proofing and double-glazing costs.
