Laura Donaghy
As your councillor for Clondalkin, I am committed to building a safer and more sustainable village with better amenities for all.
I am passionate about improving our public services, growing strong local communities, and addressing the crises in climate and biodiversity before they threaten our way of life forever - not just as a Green, but as a mum who wants to see the next generation equipped to take on a changing world.
1. More Housing:
Keep the pressure on the council to maximise direct-builds of social and age-friendly accommodation, and roll out the affordable cost-rental model (currently being piloted in Tallaght) across the county including Clondalkin and the four districts. We also need to make the most of our existing built heritage by bringing vacant and derelict units into use, turning wasted capacity into accommodation or new community space using the 'carrot' of grant-funding and the 'stick' of CPO where necessary. This includes the former RIC Barracks and the long-unused old Clondalkin pool.
2. High-Quality Public Spaces:
An inviting village through better footpaths, slower traffic, and roads that are safe enough for families to walk and cycle to school with confidence. We've already started implementing Safe Routes to School and introduced better bus connections to the train station and Red Cow Luas. We need to ensure the Local Area Plan delivers positive change without creating new problems. I support ongoing investment in heritage sites like the Grand Canal Greenway extension and the Corkagh Park upgrade, as well as making our public green spaces even more accessible for people visiting on foot, by bike or with wheelchairs/buggies.
3. Keep Clondalkin Going Green:
Clondalkin has been selected as South Dublin's first decarbonising zone, acting as an incubator for environmental projects that can be extended to the entire county. There's a huge opportunity to introduce community renewable-energy schemes, additional public EV chargers, circular economy initiatives like repair cafés and neighbourhood recycling stations, biodiversity programmes right down to estate level, and improvements to local infrastructure for residents who rely on active and public transport.
My Experience
I grew up in County Tyrone and qualified as a doctor before moving to Clondalkin. Joining the Greens, I got involved in campaigning and committee work, including being elected to the party’s National Executive Committee. It was an honour to be co-opted onto South Dublin CoCo in 2020 and serve as Deputy Mayor in 2021-22. In addition to my constituency commitments, I am part of South Dublin’s Housing Committee and one of its delegates to the Regional Assembly, working on plans, strategies and EU projects that affect Dublin and the wider region.
