Government back-track on short-term letting shows ignorance of Housing Crisis in Rural Ireland
The Green Party has described the backtracking of the government on short-term letting as "carving out areas of the country where someone is more entitled to a home than somewhere else".
The government announced today that new regulations limiting short-term lettings, intended to increase housing supply, will now only apply to towns with more than 20,000 population.
Green Party spokesperson on Housing, Cllr Oliver Moran, said:
"There are just 24 towns and cities in Ireland with a population greater than 20,000 people, yet the housing crisis affects everyone. From inner-city Dublin to rural Kerry, no one is unaffected.
"Carving out 24 areas of the country where someone is more entitled to a home than somewhere else is reprehensible. It's definitely not standing up for rural Ireland or those who want to live there.”
Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman added:
““It seems that this messy compromise was the only way the Government could get this important matter agreed. Yet again, the needs of people looking for homes is not being prioritised by this Government”.
