Green Party insist UBI for Artists must continue

In light of his announcement of an extension of the Artist's Basic Income Scheme for 65 months, the Green Party are calling on Minister O'Donovan to make the programme permanent. With a temporary extension, the Minister is extending uncertainty for Artists when it is clear that the scheme is a huge success.
Green Party Spokesperson for Arts and Culture Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Donna Cooney said,
‘I had called for Minister O'Donovan to extend and expand the scheme before the summer recess. This would give economic stability to our Artists and allow those 2000 on pilot scheme and other eligible Artists to work even more effectively.
There has been ample time to review the expert researched report and reach a decision to open the scheme up to all eligible artists. The criteria for eligibility were set when this successful scheme was brought in by previous Minister Catherine Martin, and any revisions would be minor. There are recommendations in the report and the National Campaign for the Arts have been consulted. It would not be difficult to have the process in place by September 2025 and to announce this now before the Dáil recess.'
The Green Party is very concerned about the lack of certainty in yesterday's announcement, and the potential impact this could have. The scheme has been hailed internationally as a pioneer in supporting the principals and essence of a civilised society, a successful example of Irish leadership in public policy. What is needs now is a certain future.
