Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman will today travel to Hungary to attend Budapest Pride in a show of solidarity with Hungary’s LGBTQ+ community.

This year, authorities in Hungary have refused permission for the traditional Budapest Pride march to take place, effectively banning the event for the first time in its 29-year history. The decision has been widely criticised by human rights organisations and international observers as a troubling setback for LGBTQ+ rights in the EU.

O’Gorman’s will attend the Pride Parade by invitation from Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, a member of the Hungarian Green Party. Despite the banning of the traditional parade, dozens of events and a march are still planned in the city, facilitated by the Budapest municipality.
