Minister needs to say whether priorities lie with developers or with students and their families

The Green Party is calling on the Minister for Further and Higher Education to publish the student accommodation strategy without delay, following growing uncertainty around rent caps.

Speaking today, Eva Dowling, spokesperson for further and higher education and councillor for Stillorgan said:

“We are calling on the Minister to publish the awaited Student Accommodation Strategy without delay following reports that private landlords will be allowed to increase rents for students outside of the Department of Housing rental caps.

“Third level education is becoming more unaffordable for students and families with student contribution fee rising by €500 this year and price increases already taking place across student accommodation due to rent pressure zone (RPZ) loopholes.

“People need certainty on this situation and the Minister needs to clarify whether his priorities lie with developers or with third-level students and their families. The most appropriate way to do this is for him to publish the Student Accommodation Strategy without delay.”
