Speaking on the day that Catherine Connolly is inaugurated as Ireland’s 10th president, Green Party Leader Roderic O’Gorman T.D. hailed the start of her term and paid tribute to her predecessor Michael D. Higgins.

“As Catherine Connolly begins her term as our new President I am encouraged by her vision of a presidency that is close to the people, that is concerned with their welfare, and which is expressed in the presidential oath which she takes today: “I will dedicate my abilities to the service and welfare of the people of Ireland”.

“In particular, I am heartened by a presidency that will continue to focus on the worsening effects of our changing climate and destruction of natural life. The Green Party strongly supported Catherine Connolly for these reasons and we look forward to her continuation of the incredible legacy of her predecessor, Michael D. Higgins.

“And on behalf of the Green Party, I pay tribute to and thank former President Higgins for his fourteen years of service to the people of Ireland, as a president who unfailingly demonstrated that same moral dedication to the people and their welfare."
