Men must change their behaviour to end the culture of violence against women in Ireland
As the nation comes together in vigil to mourn Ashling Murphy, who was viciously murdered this week, Green Party Justice Spokesperson Patrick Costello TD has called for the men of Ireland to take the lead in turning the tide of violence against women in Ireland.
Deputy Costello stated: “It is unacceptable that women cannot go out in their communities without being fearful for their safety. As we come together today in vigil, we as the men of Ireland need to reflect on our own behaviour and to make the necessary changes in our lives to put an end to misogyny and violence against women in Ireland.”
“The Green Party will work with our Government partners to ensure that there is political leadership focused on preventing men’s violence against women by supporting the Gardaí to pursue a zero tolerance approach against perpetrators and by calling out misogyny and the casual sexism which is pervasive in Irish society. Politicians must also take time for self reflection about our own actions.”
“The violent murder of Ashling Murphy must also be considered in the context of the 244 cases of femicide recorded in Ireland by Women’s Aid between 1996 to 2022. Men must take responsibility for changing their behaviour to keep women safe.”
