Niall Murphy announced as Green Party candidate for Galway West by-election

The Green Party is delighted to announce that Niall Murphy is the Party's candidate for the upcoming Dáil by-election in Galway West. 

Niall was nominated during a recent selection convention, and later formally ratified by the Party's Executive Committee. 

As a software engineer, Niall has worked for medical device and communications multinationals in Galway for the past twenty five years.

From 2020 until 2024, he served as a Green Party councillor for Galway City West. In that time, he relentlessly campaigned on transport including advocating controversially for a cycle lane along Galway’s scenic Prom. He also used his influence as a councillor to improve swimming facilities and disabled access on the Prom.

Outside of politics, Niall runs and swims, and has been involved in organising many cycling and running events in the city. Ten years as a hurling coach for underage teams has given him a strong insight into the sport infrastructure needs for his city.
