Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy this morning (Wed 6th) addressed the Dáil and Seanad from Kyiv. He implored Ireland to push other EU countries to impose more sanctions on Russia and cut it off from global markets and its income from oil.

Minister Eamon Ryan, Green Party Leader and Minister for Environment responded;

“The devastating details that President Zelenskyy shared with us this morning are a harrowing reminder that war has returned to Europe. Over recent days, ever more distressing images have been broadcast to us from the towns of Bucha and Irpin. What happened must be investigated and anyone found to have carried out war crimes must be prosecuted.

“Irish people have demonstrated their generosity through significant donations and continue to open their doors to provide sanctuary and shelter for the men, women and children fleeing the conflict. Our local communities will play an ever-important role in welcoming and providing support to those dealing with the trauma of this war.

We must be willing to stay the course in the face of the challenges this may bring to our daily lives, in the knowledge that our European neighbours in Ukraine are facing unimaginable suffering.

“However, Ireland and Europe must also answer President Zelenskyy’s call to stop the flow of war funds by stopping the flow of fossil fuels, which are one of the weapons which have been used in this conflict. We must be willing to stay the course in the face of the challenges this may bring to our daily lives, in the knowledge that our European neighbours in Ukraine are facing unimaginable suffering.

“It's going to be difficult, it's going to be challenging beyond compare, we all know that. But I believe our government and our people are up for that challenge - the greatest one of our time.”
